In no way you can address that Microsoft is going to keep up with its dominance. The time has gone of that diplomatic strategic concerns that Gates has came up with and dominated the IT world..

And the thing's are quite clear with the issues raised with Vista and its compatibility..

Though i wont mind it saying that for a time frame the dominance of Microsoft is going to be there.. but if they are not going to make it up as such a great move in their policy's.. no time it would just left as a Software Manufacturing company rather than a Blue Chip one

Thanks for this post and the panel discussion at OSBC. It would be interesting to see the reverse of this post as a blog entry on what you think open source could learn from Microsoft. I suppose some in the OSS community may see such a post as offensive. I find that to be disturbing. I am concerned that the open source community is at risk of turning inward. From my perspective openness is a continuum in which organizations must find their place. More open or more closed is accomplished in steps. Some take leaps of faith while others are more cautious or are required to move more slowly due to culture and other historical encumbrance. I believe the OSS community needs to continue to pressure Microsoft in some areas but should not in anyway dismiss the efforts it is taking to participate in more open and transparent ways. Microsoft is coming at the problem domain from a completely different angle than most other companies – surely there are lessons to be shared.

Thanks again,

-R

These practices may well be starting to bring them more problems than benefits. There are some signs within the company that..

re: How open source has influenced Windows Server 2008

The biggest problem I have with 2008 is its time-to-release. I use Windows 2003 R1 with IIS for our production and test server. We use a host of languages which is PHP through through cgi, ASP classic ( believe it or not it Jscript not Vb based ), Ruby on Rails for the new stuff and there is some .Net and Perl code unfortunately.

Different developers over the years used different things. The main site uses Jscript ASP to use the MS XML parser and builds XML files to render with XSLT while other parts of the site were taped on because of OSS packages available when the development time and money was nonexistant.

Then I was hired. After my case study we decided to use ISAPI-Rewrite product to allow IIS 6 to be the face, for now, and support our existing code base. Then we allow it to let the ISAPI-Rewrite reverse proxy to our Ruby On Rail's servers using the Mongrel clusters.

In the end it works out fine and everything co-exists. I have been patiently waiting for IIS 7 as a developer blog a year ago said that Server 2008 would be the first MS Server OS that would compete directly with Linux in the hosting arena. The fact 2003 and its predecessors had not doing things like reverse proxy or been more MS supported for OTHER languages is because it just wasn't meant to compete with Linux or even Unix. It was just digging deeper into what it was good at and that was an easier Networking OS to administrate.

Hopefully Windows 2008 does herald in MS willingness to compete with the Unix and Linux OSes because that means more choices. I could care less what brand it runs if the choices are the same . I don't want to use too much third party software on windows, like ISAPI-Rewrite. Don't get me wrong it is great but honestly I would trust Open source communities to keep moving forward and fixing bugs because they are community driven. That Microsoft doesn't seem to 'get' yet. Making it easier for third parties only makes things more closed and that usually means in the end less choice since one person does it so well they have no competition. Hence, ISAP-Rewrite. Buying the MS product to do the same thing is shooting yourself in the foot.
