.

Another LaTeX fan, I take it?

.

Anyway, GUI's do have their place. For example, I do think that graphical web browsers are better than text ones for most uses.

.

I have thought long and hard about that issue-- why and where GUI's work better than CLI's and vice versa. I have concluded that it is about information density. Text screens have less info in them than graphical screens, but typed commands contain much more information than mouse clicks.

.

For example, you dislike Word because it is providing enough information to you that you can see that it is doing the typesetting wrong :-). But you might have fewer problems with LyX...

.

Now, for complex tasks, like data recovery or system administration, GUI's are supposed to make the job easier, but in my experience, this has the cost of making more complex tasks much more difficult (or even impossible) from the GUI. In these cases, the CLI is really the best tool for the job.

.

Here is my primary example: FTP.

.

Pick any GUI client and compare to the command-line.

1) When you have large numbers of directories to migrate through, this migration process is easier and sometimes faster in the GUI.

2) When you have complex tasks to do via FTP, the command line *always* wins. For example, you can download a file, save it to a removable disk, and rename it *much* faster and easier in the CLI than in any GUI.

.

I suppose, however, that many tools (outside of information viewers, such as web browsers or log analyzers) could work on a hybrid model, displaying data in one window, while taking commands from another.

re: Data Recovery Using Linux

einhverfr, GUIs are never a good idea. What inherently happens when implementing a GUI is that the developer shall make assumptions about the knowledge of the target user.

As an Example of GUI Horror:

One of the reasons I can't stand and refuse to use Microsoft Word, is as I literally grew up as a real typesetter (long story). My eye knows more about layout and design than Microsoft's assumptions give me credit for. And to wade through all the preferences to shutdown all the insulting "assistance" or "ease of use" mess, is far too much to ask for, and it's also an all day job especially if you don't know exactly what radio button or checkbox to click. Microsoft Word has no conception of lists, yet it's so eager to "assist" you with them.

The whole point of a GUI is to make things easier. The only way you can make things easier is to reduce options, and what that requires is assumptions and guesses. Every GUI implementation does this.

It's already a dire situation should you require to recover data. The last thing you should really want, is someone who infact lacks the knowledge to require use of a GUI based data recovery tool. You also want such tools to have as many options as possible. You also, want such tools to work in the worst possible situations (such as only having serial console access)... so no GUI, just command line.

This is how I feel about it.
