Systems that get better the more people use them are not new.  Indeed, theoretically, proprietary software, because of its economy of scale, ought to qualify-- the more people use the software, the more money can be reinvested in development.

Of course, the limitation here is that the marketing department is not always the best way to tell developers what customers want.  Instead, it is important to have developers/engineers directly engaged with customers and this is one of the things that open source has contributed in software and beyond.
