For student developers -- where open source really starts -- this is especially true.
"fun" is not the key motivating factor for OSS development. The fact that ViM + GCC can do absolutely every concept applied or developing that Computer Science has to offer... what advantage does anything from MS has to offer? Even if VB can wash my dishes, I have to pay money for it. I don't have to spend 1 cent for GNU GCC.

I'll let Microsoft in on a little secret. This fact probably accounts for substantial motivation to adopt OSS in business and industry. New peace of hardware? Why spend the extra money on Microsoft software? Develop all key features of the hardware drivers for Linux, for the bare cost of development. If someone comes along and is willing to invest enough to outsource Win32 development to India... then Windows will get a port. <- this happens in nearly every industry from military/government to game development and medicine! With more people also adopting OSS software solutions, the prospect of porting to Windows grows less by the day.

Btw; Congrats on the recent "win" over Tomtom. Why don't you just shut this site down anyway? It's a bit like a play without an audience. Who left in disgust.
