In 2004, we started the Windows Installer XML (WiX) Toolkit project on Sourceforge

re: Microsoft & Sourceforge

From the SourceForge email I read recently, I noted that many of the projects nominated last year were for Windows, or at least cross-platform, such as TortoiseSVN and Firebird.

Anyways, I thought that was interesting.

I also thought it was odd that 7-zip was chosen as the overall winner... I mean it's a file archiver. That seems like it should be a staple of any OS to me.

Then I realized that in the Windows world, there's all these terrible choices for many very simple and yet necessary applications. I remember clicking though the WinZip nag screen every day. It didn't make any sense to me, especially when linux and unix have long standardized on these simple things.

I've never used 7-zip, and don't mean to diminish its value in any way. 7-Zip, may, in fact, be the super-duperist file archiver ever and I just don't know what I'm missing when it comes to archival. I just thought it was interesting.
