This was a significant event and milestone in the company's move towards openness and was made freely available to any employee interested in attending.

re: Open Source Day at Microsoft

I don't mean to be too dreary. I mean, I expect that there are very earnest people at Microsoft working with a very honest intent with respect to Open Source and interoperability therewith.

But it really looks like any earnest, honest folks have been betrayed by the overarching corporate strategy and intent.

After the recent, horrific ISO OOXML process (it feels too kind to call it a process) nobody with any investment in open source matters and progress will trust Microsoft. Not as far as they could spit a snake.

Glyn Moody treated the debaclw well in Linux Journal -- "The Besmirching of Microsoft". I *really* wished it had gone differntly. Imagine Microsoft taking the simple step of supporting the *existing* ISO standard as a way to gaining international acceptance by governments. And then let people use Microsoft Office because they *want* to. But no, instead Microsoft has to dream up a cockamamie "standard" of their own with some hope that they can lock folks in and *compel* unwitting consumers to use their product.

And then, along the way, Microsoft has trashed the standards process, permanently injured ISO (though it can be said that ISO handed Microsoft the pistol) and Microsoft has completely destroyed any credibility it might have had with respect to open source.

So if any of you earnest folks from Port25 go to open source conferences or to trade shows and people walk by, don't stop, but just look at you like they are looking at a freak show, you know where it all started.

It is really a shame. It could have been different. But it feels like another version of the scorpion and the frog. "I can't help it. It's my nature"
