Windows Unified Data Storage Server

Today Microsoft announced the availability of the Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003 (WUDSS). Built for mixed environments this solution is highly interoperable, without loss of performance in both NFS and CIFS environments. Remote administration is also provided both through Active X RDP and Java RDP Client Support.

This sounded interesting so we sent Hank to talk with Tres Hill, Sr Product Manager, to find out why this announcement is significant for IT professionals running heterogeneous environments.

Network Security Interoperability: Sam talks NAP/NAC with Mark Ashida

On September 6, 2006 Microsoft and Cisco announced the details of a technical partnership announced in October of 2004 focused on providing interoperability between the companies' disparate network security technologies: NAC and NAP. In this interview Sam digs into the details with Mark Ashida, General Manager of the Enterprise Networking Group. They also discuss Xorp and why Mark believes his is one of the most "open" groups at Microsoft.

Centrify's Paul Moore Fields Questions from the Community

Paul Moore sits down with Sam in this podcast, our second go around with Centrify. For those who don't know, Centrify builds software that provides access control and centralized identity management in mixed networks (Yes, this can include Windows, Linux, UNIX, Mac, J2EE and web platforms with Active Directory). This interview is a bit different as Sam runs through questions submitted to Port 25 from the first Centrify interview and Paul takes the opportunity to directly answer the community.

Today Microsoft announced the addition of it's Virtual Hard Disk Format (VHD) to the list of specifications covered by the Open Specification Promise (OSP). As a result individuals and organizations can use, redistribute and modify Microsoft's virtualization format for free.

In light of this announcement we thought it would be a good time to catch up with a company that utilizes the VHD format: Xensource. In this podcast Sam and Simon Crosby, CTO of Xensource, discuss the Xensource and Microsoft partnership, Veridian, virtualization approaches, what's on the horizon and more.

Sam interviews Rod Smith Author of the O'Reilly Book: Linux in a Windows World, a required read for OSSL staff. In this interview Sam and Rod discuss the impetus for writing the book and what readers can expect as well as Rod's background and challenges faced in penning this useful resource.

Along with the interview, O'Reilly Publications has given us permission to repost an excerpt from the book that provides useful information on configuring a Samba Server.

Kishi Interviews Arne Josefsberg General Manager of Infrastructure Services in Windows Live Operations. He is responsible for the strategy, design and operation of the online infrastructure that forms the foundation for Microsoft’s online businesses. His areas of responsibility include: global data centers, networks, hardware and operating systems standards; and foundational shared system level services such as caching, load balancing, DNS, Active Directory, back-up/restore, remote management access, content replication etc.

During Arne’s 20 years with Microsoft, he has held technical leadership roles in a number of areas. His Microsoft career started as a Technical Manager on the team that built the Nordic subsidiary region business. Since then he has held management roles in Product Support Services leading OEM and ISV customer teams and OEM hardware compatibility certification; as well as leadership roles in Information Technology managing customer systems applications and IT infrastructure. As a member of the MSN 1.0 launch team, Arne gained early knowledge of the online services business building the dial-up access network as well as data center operations.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Arne worked in systems engineering at Intel Corporation specializing in CPU, operating system and software consulting for Nordic customers. Arne holds a Masters degree in Physics from the Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden.Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, as well as photography, reading and various forms of exercise including soccer, weight training and cycling. Arne shares some insight into the challenges faced when managing a global infrastructure and provides some tips for success.
