There are no guarantees that a future of Microsoft + Yahoo! will arrive, but the possibilities have me feeling positive. These are just my personal opinions – and who knows what will happen – but a few things described below give me optimism for an increasingly... more

First, let me say thanks to Jeremy Allison and Andrew Tridgell for their decades of hard work and their optimism.
Back in March, Jeremy invited me to talk about Samba and Microsoft, and how we could work together. It turned out
that our first opportunity to meet was actually at the annual Samba developers’ conference, SambaXP in Gottingen,
Germany in late April. I spent three days there listening... more

Back in Windows 95, Microsoft made a major contribution to accessibility to computers for people with vision and hearing impairments: MSAA, or Microsoft Active Accessibility. At that time it was an additional download, but from Windows 98 on this technology was built into the OS. MSAA allows users to run screen readers, Braille devices, and other accessibility technologies that work across multiple... more

On the day before OSCON officially kicked off I was heading back from the Oregon Convention Center to downtown and ended up standing on the MAX next to someone who caught my attention for two reasons. First, he was the first person to tell me about the O'Reilly/Moglen conversation from earlier in the morning which I had missed. Second he had a cool flash based microphone that he used to record podcasts... more

Most of Port 25’s readers are aware of my commitment to interoperability between Microsoft and Linux, as exemplified in the OSSL’s work on IPsec and now the three-sided virtualization, identity, and systems management work with Novell. I’m proud to announce a leader at Microsoft who has the sole purpose of bringing Windows and Linux technologies together: Tom Hanrahan...... more

It’s been an interesting week, with people offering a range of opinions about what they think is happening in Redmond. Despite a lot of pontification, our strategy regarding intellectual property and open source has not changed – and it is not frivolous litigation or fear. IDG did an article – it’s a far more accurate reflection of Microsoft’s IP strategy than the Fortune article from earlier this... more

A few key people in the industry (Stephen Walli and Matt Asay in particular) pointed out the flaws in Hugh Macleod’s strip on Open Source. I like the Blue Monster idea (there’s some real passion in that art) but this one missed the mark, because Hugh framed the issue wrong. Hugh is clearly a smart guy and is in the process of learning about this field of software. The resulting discussion on Hugh... more

Based on the email I received I would say that many Port 25 readers noticed my post last week on job openings in my new lab. Thank you for your positive responses (and especially the resume submissions)! Brad Cutler, my counterpart at Novell, has been overwhelmed with responses as well, so thank you on his behalf. I’ve called this a sneak peek because there is much work ahead of us, but it’s time... more
