I can’t recall if I have ever blogged about this, but we certainly have shown interviews here on Port25 with Jeffery Snover, Architect of PowerShell. PowerShell is a command-line shell and scripting language for Windows: Think consistent syntax standard utilities that make managing and administering much easier...... more

You may have heard of the wild wind storms we had in the greater Puget Sound area in the weeks before Christmas. It was intense. I lost power for eight days and was without cable (and Internet connectivity) for five on top of that. The surrounding area was a disaster in the days after the storm...... more

We all use technology every day. This is the list of the 15 technologies that I found most useful (and in some cases extremely fun) in 2006. It includes all sorts of things, devices, software, open source, Apple, Microsoft, and so on. It’s not about the manufacturer or the licensing model, just a list of the things I found useful and fun in 2006, and maybe give you some holiday shopping ideas for... more

I’m sitting in Istanbul watching ships – big ships with huge loads of containers on board. I recently finished a great book titled The Box, How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger, Marc Levinson (2006), a fascinating analysis of the history of the shipping container. It may sound dry, but it’s a very interesting story – particularly of the entrepreneur, Malcom... more

Today we announced a very important partnership with Novell that represents a milestone for our industry. The partnership has technical, business and legal significance for Microsoft, Novell, our customers and the open source community. I want to break it down into reasonably sized chunks of information to help explain what it is and how we arrived here...... more

Today I had the opportunity to attend and present at the Zend/PHP Conference and Expo in San Jose. I was here to announce a technical collaboration between Zend and Microsoft that will improve the performance of PHP on Windows Server (and down the road Longhorn Server). You can read the specific details of the collaboration here.... more

On a recent visit to Thailand I had the opportunity to meet a variety of customers, open source community members, government officials and new Microsoft people. A great part of my job is the opportunity to understand the state of the software industry in different countries around the world – both in developed and emerging countries. It’s fascinating to see the patterns of similarities and often... more

Last week, O'Reilly Media posted portions of two conversations that took place at the O'Reilly Radar Executive Briefing. One between Tim O'Reilly and Brian Behlendorf about lessons from Apache and CollabNet, and the onter between Bill Hilf and Danese Cooper about Open Source at Microsoft. O'Reilly was kind enough to allow us to re-post these discussions on Port 25 - we're hoping you enjoy the lively... more

Just returning from Linux World in San Francisco, and virtualization was once again the topic du jour. A lot of you outside of the technology vendor-sphere (where we like to speak in weird acronyms and corporate buzzwords), might wonder why Microsoft and many others can’t stop talking about virtualization...... more

A couple weeks ago I was put in the ‘hot seat’ at the O’Reilly Radar Executive Briefing at OSCON in Portland. Danese Cooper from Intel had a lineup of questions to ask and we had fun (really) discussing many of the issues about Microsoft and Open Source. In his blog, Tim mentioned one of my quotes from this session about dealing with ‘close mindedness’ around the issues of Microsoft and OSS, as it... more

When I first started writing software, my only understanding of the term ‘license’ was that it was something I needed to drive a car or to catch fish. As my career progressed, I learned that software also has licenses that describe – ideally - how the author of the software wants his or her creation to be used (terms, conditions, permissions, etc.).... more
