Windows Unified Data Storage Server by MichaelF on December 05, 2006 06:36PM

Today Microsoft announced the availability of the Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003 (WUDSS).  Built for mixed environments this solution is highly interoperable, without loss of performance in both NFS and CIFS environments.  Remote administration is also provided both through Active X RDP and Java RDP Client Support.

This sounded interesting so we sent Hank to talk with Tres Hill, Sr Product Manager, to find out why this announcement is significant for IT professionals running heterogeneous environments.

  1. Hey,

Instead of a legitimate html rendering of a Press Release, I get a log in page about requiring IE 6 browser to support some outlook implementation.

Irony of Ironies-  what is wrong with being able to present information that does not require opening a gaping  security hole  into my system.

Thanks for the head's up.  I copied the link from my Outlook Web Access account and it carried some additional text with it causing you to be directed to my Web-based mail instead of the press release.

Now you'll find a properly rendered Press Release when you click the link.  :)

  3. This was very interesting.  My current employer is a Storage Software manufacturer, and this will prove, I believe, to be a very good thing for the storage needs of our customers.

  4. Hi,

Question 1: If I set up two WUDS servers, each with theor own direct attached storage, can I configure a logical volume on WUDSS1 as two mirrored volumes, one on the local disks and one on the iSCSI target of WUDSS2?

Question 2: Can a WUDSS server with iSCSI initiator talk to its own target? Can I create shares on top of iSCSI targets that reside on the same WUDSS?

The combination of 1 and 2 would give me shared storage with synchronous replication :-)
