ServerCore: Where's the GUI? by MichaelF on September 29, 2006 07:01PM

Sam and Hank spend some time with Iain McDonald and Andrew Mason.  In this interview they discuss Windows Server Core a command line controlled installation of Windows Server intended to simplify management and minimize the server installation for the four key server roles: AD, DHCP, DNS and File Server as well as others..  They discuss the architecture, why it was developed, comparisons with Linux and even show us the interface.  They also spend some time drawing on windows while hanging out in a stairwell...

  1. I understand why .net is striped down from server core but perhaps you could include a versione without gui assamblies or sort, i don't know but sometimes it looks that microsoft isn't commited with .net, right now all the programs included in the system should be in .net

  2. There's an interesting article on Port 25 about Windows Server Core, an installation of Windows Server

Can we get a transcript?  A lot of the audio was hard to understand (particularly in that hallway), and the video of the ServerCore screen wasn't very readable.

  4. On port 25 there is a nice video explaining the use and choices behind Windows Server Core. http://port25.technet.com/archive/2006/09/29/ServerCore_3A00_--Where_2700_s-the-GUI_3F00_.asp

That video was unwatchable. Mega eye strain. Which is a shame because it might have been quite interesting.

Why are so many of the videos on this site poor quality?

    Thanks for the feedback.

What format are you viewing in?  I know the MP4 format is pretty small, but it's been encoded as such to reduce the download size.  If you are using the MP4 format, would you prefer a larger file?

If your comment is tied to the video of Andrew's screen, that is the result of my novice videographer skills, I promise it will be better next time.

As for the rest of the videos I've not received complaints about the video quality but the audio quality, especially of the earlier videos, has been pointed out.  All of our videos are currently being transcribed so hopefully that will help.

If you can be more specific about the poor quality, I'll see what we can do to fix the problem.

  7. I am starting up a series of things I think people would be interested in getting ready for with Longhorn

We recently announced the addition of IIS7 to the Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 (formerly known as Longhorn Server). Server Core is an important evolution of our server product and will include a variety of roles, such as print server,
